Winter Sports – Skiing

Skiing is a very economic way of travelling over long distances of snow and individuals have been using it as such for thousands of years. In fact, the first known example of skiing was found in Norland, Norway and it has been dated back to 5000 BC. Skiing has been used for rapid travel, hunting and warfare ever since then and probably before.

However, there are basically three types of skiing, namely, Nordic, Telemark and Alpine skiing. Skiing was made popular for the international market by Sondre Norheim in the late Nineteenth Century, which coincided with Europeans becoming more adventurous in their choice of foreign holidays – well, for the rich at any rate.

Telemark skiing was developed in the Nineteen-Seventies from his notions on skiing. However, the development of skiing techniques did not quit there. The Austrians, Mathias Zdarsky and Hannes Schneider were instrumental in expanding techniques further, although one cannot help thinking that the skiers of seven thousand years ago knew most of those methods way back then too.

As skiing has become more and more popular over the last sixty or seventy years, so more and more skiing locations have sprung up. There are skiing resorts all over the world, but the most famous and popular are in Europe, especially in Scandinavia and mainland Europe.

There are skiing resorts in the Pyrenees on the border of Spain and France, in Croatia and in Italy, but the most famous resorts are in the Swiss and French Alps, which are actually adjoining. There are even skiing resorts in Scotland.

However, there are also equally decent skiing resorts in the United States, Canada and Asia. Wherever, you go skiing, there are items that a skier needs to get in order to be able to ski. a skier needs warm clothing and skiing equipment. If you are a frequent skier, then you can buy your own clothing and your own apparatus, but for most people, renting is good enough. At least, if you rent apparatus you do not have to carry lumpy gear about with you.

Resorts have ski runs of different skill levels, but you can also ‘go off piste’, which means ski the wild, untended slopes. This is a great deal more dangerous as these slopes are not tended, cleared or manned, so there is more chance of an accident and less opportunity that you will be found if you be into trouble. Avalanches are also less well predicted for off piste ski slopes.

Skiing is something that anyone can learn, but it is not easy to master. The earlier that someone starts the better. Skiers take falls and older bones break more easily than younger ones. Beginners fall more frequently than experts, so it makes sense to learn how to ski when you are young.

However, do not let that put you off, it is only a warning to be sensible. If you have always wanted to learn to ski, then go for it, but please do yourself a favour and learn the safety rules of skiing too.

Pet Friendly Rentals

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot bear to be parted from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on holiday can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Clearly the answer is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a few days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the location of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is often the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some want you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels tend not to be very pet-friendly.

If you propose taking your pet with you, it is better if you make this clear when you make your booking as more hotels do not permit pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are liable for any extra cleaning costs, should your pet get caught short.

If you are going away on holiday or for a longer period of time, it is usually a lot easier to find a holiday rental that will allow you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is wisest to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Luckily, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will permit this, although once again, you will be held responsible for any damage or mess caused by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the facility to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a cage particularly when driving. A loving dog can be a diversion in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to perform a complicated manouevre, it can cause an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner’s lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Additionally, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be thrown through the windscreen. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they usually have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his regular food to eat, lay out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be strange to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be going into your rental during your vacation, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they call.

Superb Inland Beach Cottage Rentals

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a fortnight’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, blue waters.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these destinations specifically because they are busy. They like the crowds and the night clubs that appeal to them. Mainly singles go to these kinds of places and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may prefer a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these demands too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not frequently have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is automatically connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are simply not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals instead. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be hard to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are usually complete homes, fully equipped with all the household amenities you have grown used to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are often located exactly on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach right in front of your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good idea to check photos of the cottage before you make a booking.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds just up your street, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly beautiful place to go. There are excellent locations in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not regret going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more likely that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather hire a dinghy.

What Is The Low Down On Bed Bugs?

Most individuals under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a member of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will feed on most warm-blooded animals and there is some proof that humans are not their first preference of prey.

The most common variety of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving insects and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not resemble spiders at all. Instead, most of them look like little beetles, until they have satiated themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most vulnerable.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its victim and suck blood out. It is not much to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It permits them to live and reproduce.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not pass on a disease.

A bedbug bite is comparable to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch like a mosquito bite. You will most likely experience a slight swelling with a red dot in the centre and an itch. Little more.

You can check for bed bugs quite easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a book. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and throw back the bed clothes. Pat up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a speedy method of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be seen as a solution.

With regards to the annihilation of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you live. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be proof enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the neighbourhood tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to solve the predicament. If he or she is disinclined, then go to the council hall and seek advice.

If the issue is in your own house, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refix the woodwork. If you are still worried, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These measures will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

Travelling By Train

Over the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, particularly in the United States. This may have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in massive hikes in the degree of security at airports and quite rightly so, but travellers are also put off by the lengthy queues and invasive searches at airports. This problem is even worse at busy airports and during holiday periods such as while schools are off.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to carry out your own driving and that brings its own problems, especially if you are with children and particularly if you are a single parent. Apart from that, travelling by train is a holiday in its own right. Your holiday starts the moment you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have sat down, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery whizzing past. Most of your worries are over until you arrive at where you are going. Your kids cannot become lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Moreover, trains seats are normally much more spacious than comparable airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also get up and walk about which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The vista is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all sorts of things out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the trip, but there is usually also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you want. Simply push the button and someone will come to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they conjure up. Modern locomotives might not have the nostalgia or the steam engines of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train trip much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you stand up to go to the toilet or dining carriage, your seat will still be vacant when you return. This is a colossal plus point, because it is annoying if someone takes your seat.

The next time that you decide to go away, re-evaluate going by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you like. You will not regret having given the rail network a chance, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.
