Which shelving and racking systems should my business use?

Is your business looking for a new and more effective solution for optimising storage space in your business? If so, there are plenty of good options to choose from, but you should bear your budget and the needs of your business in mind before making a final decision.

Pallet racking is one of the most popular types of shelving system used today. Specially designed for the storage of palletised goods, stock and materials, pallet is a heavy-duty materials handling system best suited for industrial environments (i.e. factories and warehouses). However, it comes in a range of different sizes, so it is suitable for use in other spaces and for other purposes.

Many businesses also use longspan, or widespan, shelving. Similar to pallet racking in the way it is constructed, this type of storage shelving is able to carry greater weights over a longer span but while also costing less and having fewer components.

If you own a business in a specific industry, there are specialist shelving and racking systems available to suit the needs of your company. So, if you own an automotive business, you should store your tyres and car doors in motor parts storage racks, whilst the owners of laundry or fashion businesses should choose garment hanging systems which allow multi-tiered garment storage.

If none of these options are suitable for your business, you could choose high bay shelving, carton-live picking racks, multi-tier storage shelving systems, or archive shelving.

For businesses which require high density storage in a small premises, and one that can be moved and relocated easily and quickly at very short notice, the right system for you is mobile shelving. One great feature of this type of storage shelving is that it moves to allow access to each part, eliminating the need for walkways or aisles.

Industrial Shelving is used in many industrial buildings and warehouses to help with the storage demands of the business. For expert advice on the options open to your business contact www.ABCracking.co.uk.

How To Get Bed Bugs Out Of Your Clothes

Bed bugs used to be a part of eveyone’s daily life before the Second World War – or should that be ‘a part of everyone’s nocturnal life’? For hundreds of years, people just grinned and bore it; they had to because there were no effectual ways of getting rid of them.

They lived in the stored clothes, the furniture, the bedding and the houses of the rich and poor alike and because houses were built so close together, families were larger and people were in and out of each others houses, you could not eradicate a bed bug infestation for long.

Then came the bombing of European cities in the Second World War 1939-1945 and numerous inner cities were unsafe, so the authorities decided to take the opportunity to level the inner city slums and begin again. An equivalent programme was began in America, but not because of bombing.

The authorities pulled down hundreds of millions of houses and made billions of rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas and other nasties homeless. In fact, rat poison and a new miracle pesticide, DDT, were used extensively in the clean up. By the end of the Forties or during the Fifties, bed bugs were just about eradicated from the Western World.

The Baby Boomer generation was the first one never to have been bothered by bed bugs. This happy situation lasted until the mid-Nineties, when increased long haul travel and increased immigration permitted bed bugs to hitch lifts back to the West. These unwelcome hitch hikers usually returned on garments that had been packed away in suitcases.

And so here we are today, in a state of affairs where the West’s major inner cities have a bed bug problem of epidemic proportions. Bed bugs are being passed around from person to person on all forms of public transport but particularly buses, trains and taxis and anywhere where individuals congregate, but particularly hotels, cinemas and waiting rooms.

So, here are a few tips on how to avoid infesting your home with bed bugs. If you stay in hotels a few nights or one night at a time, merely unpack what you need to at any one time. In other words, live out of your suitcase.

If you are on a longer holiday, by all means, take out everything, but keep your suitcase shut and have all your clothes boil washed, dry cleaned or tumble-dried on ‘HOT’ before you repack them to go home.

If this cannot be done because of the type of cloth, inspect all the seams, hems, pockets, cuffs and collars and blow them with the hair-dryer on ‘HOT’. The hair-dryer is not quite as effective, but all stages of a bed bug’s life cycle are killed by seven minutes exposure to temperatures above 45C or 115F.

If you cannot heat-treat your clothes before you leave the hotel, seal them up in plastic bags and treat them when you get home – preferably in a laundrette or dry cleaners.

What do you do about your overcoat, if you mix with people every day on the bus or at work? This is a difficult one. Bed bugs are resilient to all types of insect killer, which is why we are experiencing this epidemic, so you will literally have to inspect your overcoat every time you come home or get one that you can put in the tumble-dryer every night.

One bed bug can lay 300 eggs and go for a year without feeding, so you cannot know that you have not got bed bugs, you can only say that you have not seen any – yet.

How To Organize Your Coat Closet Or Cloakroom

Most people have some type of arrangement near the main entrance to their house, mostly the front door, for storing residents’ and visitors’ coats. Some houses have a simple row of hooks in the hall, whereas others have a dedicated coat closet or cloakroom.

Furthermore, most of these spaces are pretty chaotic with coats heaped on top of other coats which are heaped on top of other coats that no-one has worn for years.

You should apply the same rules to organizing this region, let’s call it a cloakroom for easy reference, as you do to your bedroom closets or wardrobes. The trick is that everything must have a place and everything should be in that place, which means that you and all the family or all the household have to know the rules.

It simply does not make for a tidy cloakroom if some people stick to the rules whilst others do what they please. Let’s take an average family or household of four as another norm. Four people such as this will own a coat or two each, a jacket, perhaps an umbrella and a number of pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers perhaps.

You could install a shoe rack so that each person can store, say, three pairs of shoes each in the cloakroom. If your shoe rack has four levels then three pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers per person. Everything else has to be stored either in the bedroom or the garage. Some footwear is seasonal, so this ought not become too much of a difficulty.

Likewise with coats and jackets. You could have a row of coat hooks around the walls of the cloakroom and allocate every member of the household a certain number of hooks. (Look out for the cloakroom hooks that have a top and bottom hook – two for the space of one).

Again, all non-seasonal coats to be stored in the bedroom. One more tip here, remember to allocate a row of hooks for visitors. Maybe one of the small walls of a small cloakroom could be set apart for guests.

An ideal cloakroom would have a shoe rack at the floor level or a bit higher, then a row of double coat pegs and then a shelf running around it. This shelf is important. People used to wear hats a great deal more than they do now, but some people still wear gloves, scarves and shawls that they would rather not hang on a peg and others like to ride a motorbike.

Never worry, you will always find something to put on a shelf in a cloakroom even if it is merely a tin of air freshener to spray around before guests arrive.

One more thing that is often stored in cloakrooms that you should reserve space for is the vacuum cleaner. It is handy to have a vacuum cleaner in the hall to suck up the bits of mud and rubbish that inevitably get carried or blown into the hall, but you will always have room for one in a well-organized cloakroom
